“Last Christmas”: Emily’s Christmas in the mountains
It all starts at the airport. Emily is due to spend Christmas in Chicago, her flight is cancelled, and Camille’s father invites her to the family chalet in Megève, where Gabriel is spending the holidays. The timing could hardly be worse, and one afternoon on the slopes is enough to prove it: Camille and Gabriel ski off ahead, Emily is left alone on the piste, falls several times, and a stranger helps her down. His name is Marcello, and we will be seeing him again.
On screen it is Christmas. On the shooting schedule it was early March. More than 120 people worked on location, including 116 extras and stand-ins, some of them recruited at a casting session at the bus station. As the crew arrived, the snow began to fall, recalls the show’s creator, Darren Star.

The actor who put Megève forward
Megève owes the part to one of its own. William Abadie, who plays the perfumer Antoine Lambert, grew up here. When the production decided to film a winter storyline, he made the case for his home resort to Darren Star and sent over a short film of its loveliest corners. His character does not appear in these scenes, but he came to the shoot anyway, at the creator’s invitation.
In the village: the carriage and the quai du Glapet

The carriage ride sets off from place de l’Église, at the foot of the bell tower. The drivers really do wait here and leave on request, for a 15-minute lap of the centre or a longer loop. Our page on horse-drawn carriages in Megève covers the routes.
The shopping takes place along the quai du Glapet, named after one of Megève’s rivers. For the rest of the pedestrian centre, see our guide to what to do in Megève in winter.
On Mont d’Arbois: Emily stays in Megève but skis in Saint-Gervais
The ski scenes were shot on Mont d’Arbois, which is not quite Megève. The top of the mountain belongs to the neighbouring commune, as Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of Saint-Gervais at the time of filming, was pleased to point out: “Emily stays in Megève but skis in Saint-Gervais.” Skiers will never notice the boundary: the Mont d’Arbois, Princesse and Bettex gondolas all arrive at the top, in the same ski area.

L’Idéal 1850: lunch facing Mont Blanc
For the lunch scene, the director wanted one of the finest views in Megève, and found it at L’Idéal 1850, a mountain chalet on the slopes of Mont d’Arbois whose terrace looks out over the valley and the Mont Blanc massif. The scene took around ten takes. You get there on skis, or on foot after a hike.

Camille’s family chalet
The house where Emily turns up with her suitcases is Le Chalet des Fermes de Marie, one of the chalets belonging to this Sibuet group hotel in the heart of Megève. A full day of filming took place here. In the story, it is the family’s familiar retreat, with oysters and goose on the Christmas menu.
AEC tip: to relive the moment, book a table at Les Fermes de Marie, an excellent place to eat. The Traditionnel restaurant, at the heart of the main chalet, gives pride of place to the spit roast in the fireplace on Saturday evenings. For fondue or raclette, head to the Carnotzet. Outside, stop for a photo on the bench with its red cushions and white crosses: a moment with your princess.

Where to stay to relive the episode
It depends which scene you prefer. From the centre, the carriages and the quai du Glapet are a short walk away. On Mont d’Arbois, the gondola and the golf course are close at hand, away from the bustle of the village. Our guide to where to stay in Megève compares the two. Our agents can then show you our chalets and apartments in Megève, including chalets for 10 guests or more, for a big Christmas table. For the journey, see how to get to Megève.
AEC tip: to catch the mood of the episode, aim for December, when the great Christmas tree goes up on place de l’Église. Our article on a family Christmas on the slopes will help you plan around those dates.
Emily storms off from Gabriel at the foot of the slopes after a single afternoon’s skiing. Megève deserves better: a week, a big chalet, and one clear morning at the top of Mont d’Arbois, with Mont Blanc straight ahead.
