Calanque de Sormiou: the sandy beach, the cabins and Le Château open since 1948
Calanque de Sormiou is one of the most accessible on foot from Marseille, and one of the only ones combining a sandy beach, original cabins and a historic restaurant. It forms part of the Parc national des Calanques, established in 2012, and its access road is closed to vehicles during daylight hours in the high season.
The setting: roughly ten kilometres south of Marseille, two limestone cliffs
The calanque opens onto the Mediterranean roughly ten kilometres south of central Marseille, in the 9th arrondissement. Tall white cliffs frame a cove of a few hundred metres across, with a sandy bottom and turquoise water on calm days. It is one of the rare calanques to possess an actual sandy beach; most others are characterised by pebbles and rocks.
The land behind the beach is occupied by some hundred cabins, a legacy from the twentieth century. Originally, these shelters belonged to modest fishermen; over time their use became progressively seasonal residential. The cabins pass from one generation to the next, and the protection of the site has preserved their architecture.
Le Château and Le Lunch: two restaurants, one history
Two historic establishments have long defined Sormiou. Le Château, opened in 1948 by Rose and Titin Martin, occupies the only proper stone building in the calanque, built in 1894 as a summer residence by Count Alfred de Ferry and his wife Marie. The building has borne the name “Château” since that time, bestowed by local fishermen in contrast to the cabins. The Rambaldy family have run it since 1980.
Le Lunch, founded in 1906 under the name Lunch Américain and situated on the beach, reached its peak in the late 1990s under chef Christophe Negrel. It was demolished in 2017 in application of the Loi Littoral; it is today the only one of the two historic establishments to have disappeared. The restaurant that remains is Le Château.
How to reach it in 2026
The rule is simple to remember: in summer, the road is closed to vehicles. It is closed from 7am to 7pm, every day at the height of summer and then weekends in September: check the annual calendar on the Marseille city website. Spring (April and May) introduces partial closures, typically on weekends and public holidays, from 7am to 7pm.
To go on foot, two main starting points:
From the Baumettes car park, allow 1 to 1.5 hours of walking depending on the route.
From the Sormiou pass (hilltop car park), a more direct descent in 45 minutes, though the climb back at the end of the day.
The calanque also lies on the GR98 trail, which runs along the calanques from Callelongue to the west to Cassis to the east.
Summer: monitoring massif closures
From 1 June to 30 September, on-foot access to the massif is likewise subject to a prefectural order linked to weather and fire risk. The rule is checked each evening, after 6pm, on the official map risque-prevention-incendie.fr/13, which publishes a colour code for each massif:
green, yellow or orange = access permitted;
red = access prohibited all day.
At the highest-risk times (heat waves, drought, mistral winds), red frequently appears and on-foot access is suspended. This is why it is advisable to plan the outing early, around 7am, and to have a contingency plan.
Going by boat: another perspective
Numerous shuttle services departing from the Vieux-Port de Marseille, Pointe-Rouge or Cassis offer passages past the calanque, some with swimming stops. This is an option that circumvents terrestrial access constraints, though Sormiou is experienced from the sea, without the experience of the cabins or the footpath. The two approaches complement rather than substitute for one another.
Planning a stay in the Marseille region
AEC Collection selects and represents villas and apartments of character in Provence and the Marseille region. For a swim at Sormiou, the golden rule is to check the massif colour the evening before on risque-prevention-incendie.fr/13 and to leave early if you wish to avoid the midday heat.
