Plage de la Mala: the cove at Cap-d'Ail that rewards the walk

Updated on 5 October 2026 3 min read

First, a useful clarification: Plage de la Mala is not at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat or Èze, but on the commune of Cap-d’Ail, wedged between Monaco and Èze-Bord-de-Mer. It is one of the rare coves on the Riviera that must be earned on foot; no road leads down to it, only two pedestrian accesses.

This access constraint explains everything: visitor numbers remain limited even in July, the setting has retained its authenticity, and the approach walk is part of the experience.

01

Two accesses, two walking times

The first is quick but steep: the descent via the Mala stairs, from the eponymous lane, runs past the illustrious villa Eden and several Belle Époque residences. Allow about ten minutes to descend, longer to climb back up, with uneven steps and a dry elevation change.

The second is longer but significantly more rewarding: the coastal path of Cap-d’Ail, which connects Plage Marquet to Plage Mala over 3.6km. Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes on foot. The path is marked with interpretive signs, passes through rare Mediterranean flora, runs past the gardens of Belle Époque villas and passes near an ancient quarry of millstones whose history remains partially mysterious.

02

A path that closes in poor weather

An important detail for those planning the walk: the coastal path has thirteen safety barriers that municipal staff close as soon as the sea becomes rough or the wind strengthens. It is best to check conditions with Cap-d’Ail town hall before setting out, particularly between November and March. Should the path be closed, access remains possible via the stairs.

03

The cove setting

The beach sits nestled in limestone rocks where fine sand and smooth pebbles intermingle. The water here is particularly clear, and the visual separation from the coastal road imparts an atmosphere of a private bay. Two beach establishments operate in season; part of the cove remains public.

When to visit

Visitor numbers rise in July, August but remain incomparable to those at Monaco’s main beach or Larvotto. June and September offer water still (or already) at 22-23°C, without the crowds. May and October suit the coastal walk and swimming for the seasoned. In winter, the walk remains possible when the path is open, but bathing is not realistic.
