Mont-Fort 3330m: the roof of the 4 Vallées domain

Updated on 5 October 2026 3 min read

The Mont-Fort cable car deposits its passengers at 3330 metres, at the extremity of a rocky ridge transformed into a viewing platform by a metal structure. The vista opens onto five emblematic summits: Mont Blanc to the west, Grand Combin straight ahead, Dent Blanche, Dent d’Hérens and Cervin in the background. This is the 360-degree observatory of the 4 Vallées domain, Switzerland’s largest ski area.

Verbier serves as the main entrance to the network, which connects five Valais resorts: Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon. The combined pass grants access to a vast domain, between 1500 and 3330 metres altitude. The actual extent of marked runs is contested, 410km claimed, 164km measured by an independent surveyor, but the scale of off-piste terrain more than compensates for the discrepancy.

01

Verbier, departure base

The village of Verbier sits on a plateau at 1500 metres, facing due south. The domain rises to 3330 metres. The hub of skiing activity is the Ruinettes crossroads (2200m), where runs from the sector converge.

Access is via the Médran cable car from Verbier, then by the Ruinettes, Attelas and Jumbo lifts to the Col des Gentianes, and finally the Mont-Fort cable car. Allow thirty minutes in total when the lifts are running smoothly.

02

Mont-Fort and its descents

Mont-Fort offers three signature descents. The black run from Mont-Fort, steep and exposed, drops from the summit towards Col des Gentianes, one of the most challenging slopes in the domain. The descent northwards to Tortin alternates clean sections with technical passages. The off-piste terrain around Tortin and Mont-Gelé remains one of the most respected areas in Valais, to be undertaken only with a guide.

For intermediate skiers, the four valleys offer more accessible terrain: the Veysonnaz-Thyon crossing with the Ours and Combatzeline runs, the vast Nendaz sector. The traverse from Verbier to Thyon occupies a full day.

03

Mont-Fort in summer

The summit is accessible for part of the summer. In summer, the platform opens to hikers. The trails to Mont-Gelé (3023m) and the Sentier des Chamois are classics. For those not keen on hiking, a simple return trip by cable car with lunch at the panoramic table warrants a half-day visit.

Passes and access

The 4 Vallées pass grants access to the entire connected domain. Pedestrian pass return ticket to Mont-Fort available for non-skiers. Dynamic pricing.

Access from Geneva: 2 hours by car, or by train to le Châble then cable car. The village is partially pedestrianised in winter; hotels and chalets generally have their own parking.

05

When to visit

January (outside French school holidays) for fresh snow. March for long days. Late April remains skiable at Mont-Fort thanks to the altitude. Summer (July, August) for the platform, hiking and downhill mountain biking.
