Alta Lumina in Les Gets: a nocturnal journey by Moment Factory
In Les Gets, as darkness falls in season, a forest trail illuminates. Alta Lumina is neither a seated performance nor a simple string of lights: it is an immersive nocturnal journey designed by Canadian studio Moment Factory, which combines projections, spatialised sound, landscape staging and interactivity over approximately one kilometre through the woodland.
Behind Alta Lumina
The project is the work of Moment Factory, a multimedia studio based in Montréal that created the Lumina series of nocturnal forest trails, deployed over several years across a dozen sites worldwide (Canada, United States, Japan, Singapore, Europe).
Alta Lumina, open to the public since late July 2020, was the first Lumina trail in Europe. Success was immediate: more than 250,000 visitors have since walked the trail, a figure that has established Alta Lumina as one of the defining attractions in Les Gets, both in and out of season.
The journey narrative
The scenario is deliberately dreamlike, without spoken dialogue: one follows the journey of a wandering musician and his hot-air balloon through the mountains. The trail comprises a succession of tableaux, each built around a distinct visual or interactive effect, a sonorous clearing, inhabited woodland, panoramic scene.
Allow approximately one hour to walk the kilometre of trail at a measured pace. Contemplative stops are built into the design; hurrying diminishes the experience.
The technical infrastructure
What distinguishes Alta Lumina from traditional illuminated installations is the concealed technical apparatus. Projection mapping on trees and ground, multichannel sound positioned throughout zones, interactive installations, carefully calibrated nocturnal lighting to preserve the perception of the forest itself rather than saturate it with colour. This restraint explains the Moment Factory signature: the studio understands when not to illuminate.

Travel Book AEC CollectionWhen to visit: seasonality
Alta Lumina operates according to distinct opening seasons, primarily winter and summer, with a few shoulder periods. Hours vary according to sunset time: departure towards late afternoon in winter, later in summer. Advance booking is generally required during high season, with staggered entry times to avoid congestion on the trail.
The journey is accessible to families and designed for a broad audience, not reserved for children despite its narrative dimension.
Dress code and conditions
The trail is outdoors, in woodland: wear clothing appropriate to the season (warm in winter, weatherproof in uncertain conditions), closed footwear, and accept that weather is part of the experience. The trail is marked and secure, but the forest at night remains the forest at night; the absence of public lighting between tableaux is an integral part of the design.
